IP moving forward in ASEAN, Cambodia joins Madrid Protocol

On 5 March 2015, Cambodia became the 95th member of the Madrid System by depositing its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol Relating to Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks.

Cambodia takes a step forward by joining the Madrid System. When the  Madrid Protocol enters into force on 5 June 2015 with respect to Cambodia, brand owners in Cambodia may look to protecting their brands through one  international application covering all the nations of the Madrid Protocol which now number more than 110 countries. It will also be possible for foreign brand owners to obtain protection for their brands in Cambodia through a single international application.

The Madrid System simplifies the process of multinational trademark registration by reducing the requirement to file an application at the intellectual property office in each country in which protection is sought. It also simplifies the subsequent management of the mark, making it possible to record any changes or renewal of registration through a single procedural step.

As part of the preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) harmonization, Asean member states are pushed to ratify the Madrid Protocol, with a target to accede within this year.  Other than Cambodia, only Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam have acceded to the Protocol.
