Over 30+ years, ZICO Law has championed initiatives that empower our staff, reduce our impact on the environment, and institutionalize responsible and ethical business practices.

ZICO Law remains committed toward practising responsible conduct in its daily business activities across all aspects of our operations. More so than ever, we wish to reiterate our commitment to a responsible and ethical approach toward doing business in the right way.

Through our ESG in Action framework, we are taking responsibility by embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance initiatives (ESG) in everything we do and making conscious decisions for a sustainable future.

Actions speak louder

Instilled within ZICO Law is a culture of empowerment, diversity, curiosity, and trust. We work hard to nurture this forward-thinking culture and showcased below are just some of the initiatives that demonstrate ESG in action.

Our ESG Initiatives

We are proud of the work we have done championing ESG within our firm. Highlighted below are some of our key initiatives, events and thought leadership. We will continue to work on being a more responsible, ethical, and inclusive employer across ASEAN.

ESG-Environment

We believe that businesses are responsible for achieving good environmental practice and operating in a sustainable manner. In 2018, ZICO Law signed a firm-wide Environmental Policy and are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral and fundamental part of our business strategy and operating methods. It is our priority to encourage our employees, suppliers and all business associates to maintain the highest level of eco-friendliness possible.

Green Office Initiative (2018)

After the implementation of energy-saving policies and technologies in some of our offices e.g. video conferencing, motion-activated lighting etc., we have achieved a 5.37% reduction in energy consumption and a 4.75% reduction in emissions. We look to roll out more of these policies and technologies across all of our remaining offices to further reduce our impact on the environment and to play our part in combating climate change. We have also managed to restrict our usage of single-use plastics to specific purposes in our offices, something which we will look to further tweak as we try and improve on our usage of resources.

Environmental Thought Leadership

Keeping our employees and clients updated on important environmental challenges across ASEAN is important. We dedicate time to research and present insights and developments on the promotion of renewable energy generation and tackling climate issues.

From the increasing importance of solar and other renewable energy sources, energy efficiency efforts, development of regulatory and fiscal policies and frameworks in stimulating renewable energy generation, to the growing case for green finance and investment opportunities, our publications give a useful and holistic overview of how ASEAN can and is rising to the challenge.

ESG-Governance

As a leading professional services provider that is also highly regulated, governance is a key and therefore high priority sustainability area for ZICO Law. Regulatory compliance, internal corporate governance and codified business ethics is critical for service quality.

Corporate Governance

In 2018, we committed to a transformation of the iRBS in order to improve service delivery, reduce inefficiencies, and streamline costs. As part of this transformation, the following was achieved in 2019:

  • Merging service units. Knowledge Management and Training Unit of the iRBS were merged in view of the overlapping and synergistic services they provide to the ZICO Law network.
  • Reviewing training needs. A joint review by the Human Resources, Knowledge Management, Training, and Compliance Unit was undertaken to better align training resources and curriculums with the ZICO Law network’s needs.
  • Digitizing and streamlining communications. Consolidation of our different modes of virtual communications under the Microsoft Team platform was implemented to both reduce unnecessary costs e.g. usage of conference call facilities and to boost workplace productivity.
  • Improving and simplifying risk management. To provide better focus on specific aspects of risk, the Enterprise Risk Management System has been split into 3 components – financial risk, compliance risk, and other risks. Financial risk will be addressed by the Chief Financial Officer, while all other risk aspects being overseen by the Chief Risk Officer. The Chief Risk Officer and the Chief Financial Officer both report directly to the Audit and Risk Committee on risk issues, providing the necessary input on enterprise risk.

Business Ethics & Policies

As professional advisors to ASEAN’s business community and the region’s policymakers, adopting a zero tolerance approach towards corruption is critical to our business continuity, branding, and reputation as trusted advisors.
