On 22 April 2021, we held an internal ZICO Green Learning Session featuring Dr Chee Su Yin from Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), University Sains Malaysia to speak on the topic “In the face of climate change: Nature-based solutions for the marine environment, society, and sustainability”.
Marine and coastal environments around the world are facing increased pressures from pollution, habitat destruction, ocean acidification, and climate change. As a result, human society is impacted in terms of reduced benefits from ecosystem services such as coastal protection, clean water, culture, and aesthetics, and increased costs from restoration efforts, physical displacement, human-wildlife conflicts, and social changes associated with changing patterns of resource use. This presentation dove into these pressures and their impacts, and how the role of humans and nature is critical in safeguarding the environment for our future generations.
